Stranded whales saved in Australia Date : 07/07/2005 Scores of false killer whales have been saved in Western Australia after volunteers turned out in their hundreds to help return the animals to the water. The local people helping save the whales had rushed to the scene of the stranding following a call for help from the government. Of the 74 animals reported to have stranded, one is thought to have died. False killer whales are actually large members of the dolphin family, with adults measuring between 4.3 and 6 metres in length and weighing up to 2.2 tonnes. They are very social animals, and have been seen in groups numbering several hundred animals. Sadly they are also known to frequently strand, and there have already been several recorded incidences of this species stranding on the west coast of Australia. Source: BBC/WDCS
